Israel and our independence day
July 04, 2013, 05:00 AM
Editor,

John Kerry has received the usual VIP treatment upon his arrival in Israel/Palestine. That being the calculated announcement of yet more illegal settlements right about the time he can enjoy having his nose rubbed in it. Vice President Joe Biden got the same thumb-in-the-eye greeting as have just about every other emissary we send. Yet we are unable to respond, and even the usually outspoken pundits like Rachel Maddow and her liberal buddies remain very quiet.

Such is the self-censorship that surrounds the scary monster that is the Israel Lobby. It looks like only comedian Jon Stewart is willing to have fun with this lack of political courage present in all others. It also seems like only the whistleblowers and those willing to put their careers and even lives on the line tell us those inconvenient truths that we really need to know. Happy Fourth of July and independence day folks.

One bright spot I noticed recently is the refusal of McDonald’s restaurant chain to open a branch beyond the pre-1967 green line that is internationally recognized as Israel’s real border. They won’t open in the illegal city of Ariel. For whatever reason, they feel it inappropriate. Well those chicken sandwiches and frozen lattes aren’t so bad after all.
