Facts about fitness center
July 02, 2013, 05:00 AM

Responding to Bill Collins’ letter “New college pool is costly to users and taxpayers” in the June 25 edition of the Daily Journal, we wanted to provide accurate information regarding San Mateo Athletic Club at College of San Mateo.

First, SMAC does charge a daily fee for nonmembers: $20 for non-sponsored guests and $15 for sponsored guests. The pass allows use of the pools and health club. If a guest joins within 30 days of their visit, the fee is credited towards their registration fee. This is a common health club practice throughout the state and our fee is in line with what other clubs charge.

Second, SMAC is an active classroom and a professionally managed facility shared with CSM’s athletic programs, adaptive physical education and career-technical training programs. Within the facility, students and members enjoy credit and non-credit classes, community education programs and adaptive fitness activities, as well as health club workout activities. This shared space enables the district to maximize use of the facility and provides revenue that supplements the college budget and fully funds SMAC’s equipment maintenance and replacement.

Third, all staff members using the club (except for SMAC employees) are either dues-paying members or faculty teaching a class. The assertion that SMAC is for the “moneyed and district staff” has no factual basis whatsoever.

The mission of SMAC is more than providing a revenue stream to the district. Our objective is to create an environment that engages students, staff and the community in the pursuit of health and physical fitness. We strive to be the best facility in the Bay Area which offers not only a place to work out, but also a place to teach, learn and develop fitness habits that will benefit those we serve for a lifetime.
