George Glushenok

George Glushenok (1941-2013) died Wednesday morning, April 24, following a long struggle with myelofibrosis.

He was born on Manhattan where his family resided until they moved to Jackson, N.J.

Following graduation from Lakewood High School in 1959, George attended Rutgers University, where he earned a bachelor’s of arts degree.

He obtained his master’s degree in Russian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968.

He taught Russian at Emory University in Atlanta. After earning a master’s degree in library science, he worked as a librarian at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta. In 1976, he and his life partner moved to Palo Alto seeking new career opportunities, eventually obtaining a reference position at the San Francisco Public Library (Main). He also served in responsible managerial positions in various public libraries on the San Francisco Peninsula, including the South San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Redwood City libraries.

George retired in 2006, but continued working part time in the Menlo Park and San Mateo libraries until shortly before his death.

George is survived by his younger sister Lydia Davis and family, by his older sister Alice Wybernac and family, and by his life partner of 46 years, Robert Mayer.
