Off-duty deputy dies in motorcycle crash
January 31, 2013, 12:00 AM Daily Journal Staff Report

An off-duty San Mateo County sheriff's deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash in Burlingame early yesterday afternoon.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Officer identified him as Eric Mertl, 51.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., a motorcycle driven by Mertl collided with a car at the intersection of El Camino Real and Bellevue Avenue. Mertl was transported by paramedics to Stanford Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries, according to Burlingame police.

The driver of the car, a 64-year-old woman out of San Carlos, was not injured, according to police.

Mertl joined the Sheriff's Office in 2005 as a lateral hire with 19 years service at the Millbrae Police Department. He leaves behind a wife and 12-year-old son, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation and the Burlingame Police Department is asking anyone with information on the accident or who may have witnessed it to call 777-4100.

Daily Journal Quick Poll

The city of San Mateo is moving toward hiring a private company to remove graffiti in the city faster. Do you think it's a good idea?

If it means it will be removed faster, I'm all for it
No, the city should have its own workers remove it
Some of the graffiti is artistic, they should leave it alone
