Sequoia buys industrial land

Purchasing a 1.6-acre piece of property in an industrial area of Redwood City will allow the Sequoia Union High School District to relocate transportation services and create additional space for growing enrollment, according to district officials.

The district completed the purchase July 31 of a 1.6-acre property at 1090 Mills Way in Redwood City which includes a 26,454-square-foot building using Measure J funds — a $165 million bond measure passed by voters in 2008. Acquiring the land, district officials say, will allow for some departments to be moved from space currently attached to the Sequoia High School campus. Then, the district will have more options to meet expected growth in coming years. On Wednesday, the board will get an update about the sale and how the district will proceed in trying to meet growth.

The purchase frees up premium space attached to the Sequoia campus, which is expected to have steady growth in the coming years, said board President Alan Sarver.

A recent demographic survey for the district projected enrollment to grow from 8,269 in the 2011-12 school year to 9,722 in the 2020-21 school year. In terms of the number of students, the boundary area for Sequoia High School is expected to get the most from that growth — 540 students. Each of the district’s four campuses is estimated to have enrollment increase by at least 324 students by the 2020-21 school year, according to the study.

How to use the new space and build on the other campuses to meet the growth will be a lengthy process which begins tonight, said Sarver. One thing to consider is how much each site should be expanded in terms of capacity, he said.

By the 2013-14 school year, planned facility projects — remodeling the Sequoia woodshop, and the construction of a new digital arts building at Woodside High School, biotech building at Carlmont High School and a digital arts building at Menlo-Atherton High School — will meet the growing capacity needs of three of the campuses through at least 2016-17, according to the demographics study. Sequoia, on the other hand, will fall short by the 2014-15 school year.

Moving forward, district staff is recommending to study current facilities and opportunities to expand; the role of the Myrtle Street campus; information about setting capacity targets/limits for each campus; adjusting school boundaries and development of a classroom construction plan.

The board meets 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the District Office, 480 James Ave., Redwood City.
